Gtalk sits nicely in you gmail inbox sidebar, but it limits you to have your inbox opened all the time.
Just found this cool addon which adds a gtalk sidebar inside your mozilla firefox browser and you can browse the web as usual while chatting with ur friends.
To open either press alt+G, the icon or the entry in the view sidebar menu.
