How to create CHM file?

KEL CHM Creator is a freeware CHM creator that uses Microsoft® HTML Help Workshop to combine your HTML files into one compressed and compact CHM (Compiled Help Modules) file. The CHM file-format is widely used for software documentation and e-book publication. Using KEL CHM Creator you can create your own customized CHM files quickly. It provides many tools including an easy way to decompile CHM files, an indexing system and much more.

You just have to do this:
- Download the Microsoft HTML Help Workshop from here and install it on your system.

- Unzip and install this version of KEL CHM Creator Download.

You can create a new project, Add HTML files in it; construct a complex table of contents (TOC) by dragging and dropping some entries over others.

This application is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 to run.

To create a new project select New Project from the File menu.  On the dialog that appears you should enter the name of the new project. When creating a new project make sure that you save it in an empty folder that will host the HTML files that will be compiled to produce your CHM file. Once this is done, you can see that there are three files generated inside the project directory:

      NewProject_Name.hhp   (Project File)

      NewProject_Name.hhc   (TOC File)

      NewProject_Name.hhk   (Index File)

Where NewProject_Name is the name of the created project.

These files are used in your project and are specified in the Compiler tab, as shown below:

To add topics into your Table Of Contents (TOC), right click in the TOC window and select Add Nodes. If during the addition there is an existing TOC node (topic) selected, the added nodes will become child nodes of this node (subtopics).

After inserting the files that you want in the TOC you can rename TOC entries. To change the position of a topic use drag & drop. When you drop a topic on an other topic, the first becomes a subtopic of the second. When you drop it on empty space it simply moves in the place that you dropped it.

The index is usually used to link keywords to HTML files stored in your CHM file. An HTML file can contain many keywords associated with it.  Constructing the index for your CHM file is an easy process. You can instruct KEL CHM Creator to create your index, simply, by right clicking on the index window and then selecting Update Index From HTML Keywords from the pop-up menu.

On the dialog that appears after that, press OK. Then, all the keywords of all the HTML files in your project will be found, as well as the interconnections between files and keywords, and the index of your project will be updated.

You can compile your project (build your CHM file) by pressing F7 or by using the menu. By doing so, the Compiler Output window will pop up and the compilation will complete after a period of time. The compilation is complete when the View CHM button on the Compiler Output window becomes enabled. By pressing this button the compiled CHM file opens. You can also view the compiled CHM file by pressing the View Compiled CHM button from the toolbar.
