I don’t know much abt ORKUT as I joined it recently and neither I do have friends.
But google is pretty easy. The desired person to whom u are wanting to chat must have gmail a/c.
Google to Yahoo or MSN is not possible as of now.
So first u need to invite your friends for having a chat, after that if your friend accepts it then u will get to see a gray kinda dot beside the name of your friend. If it turns green that means he/she is on line u can chat. The dot also may be red which indicates he/she is on line but busy still u can chat and sometimes the dot becomes orange which indicates that your friend is on line but not using the gmail a/c. I mean though he/she is logged in but they have either left or having a look at some other sites.

You have to first add email id’s in the contact and save them or if you have sent any email it automatically adds in to the contacts.
You have to install google talk where in you shall be updated by the software who ever is online or who comes online later. A pop up is flashed every time who comes online on the computer screen. Further you have to mark the contacts to highlight in the the EDIT option marking it as “Show in chat list” so who ever existing online before you login will also be seen with green light next to it.
