Mumbai Cyclone Update

In a news update the Metereological department has downgraded the impact of the 'Cyclone Phyan' on Mumbai on Wednesday (November 11)saying the tail of the storm was expected to skim the coast off Mumbai bringing some rain to the area, while the brunt would be borne by northern Maharashtra and southe
rn Gujarat. The predicted rainfall in Mumbai is thus moderate, with the wind factor being a more important hazard to watch out for, municipal authorities have said. Meanwhile, intermittent rainfall and strong winds led to road snarls and flight delays of between 30 to 50 minutes in the morning. The Metereological department however, warns that residents should not get complacent but take the proper precautions. Tropical cyclone is an intense low pressure system which covers a radius of 300-500 kms, and is accompanied by string winds, heavy rainfall, rough seas, storm surge - it is not a point area which will be affected but a pretty large area. And Mumbai and adjoining areas will also see an impact of the cyclone which will be crossing teh coast this evening or early night. The low-lying areas and coastal areas will be worst affected with a very strong surge and strong winds can hit here. Fisher communities and people in low lying areas have to be careful. A multitude of hazards are associated with the storm - the combined effect of winds and rain can damage property and life if precautions are not taken. Normally we have evacuation from coastal and low-lying areas. If that is done loss of lives can be minimised." said the chief of the Indian Metereological Deprtment, Director General Ajit Tyagi giving the latest update at 11:30 am this morning.
